North Carolina ArboretumThe
North Carolina Arboretum is one of
Asheville’s most popular attractions
aside from the
Biltmore Estate NC,
and welcomes a large number of visitors each
year. Located in the Bent Creek
Experimental Forest, a special part
of the North Carolina Pisgah
National Forest, the NC Arboretum is
a place filled with native and rare
flowers and is a wonderful place to
tour while you enjoy
NC Camping
Asheville Vacations. If you plan to
visit, be sure to bring along a
camera, you do not want to miss this
amazing opportunity to photograph
some of the most beautiful gardens
in the country.
The idea for the North Carolina
Arboretum dates back to the days
when renowned landscape designer and
horticulturist, Frederick Law
Olmsted was designing the gardens
and grounds around the Biltmore
Estate NC. Olmsted wished to create
an arboretum at the Biltmore,
however George Vanderbilt never
seemed too keen on the idea and
instead wished to create immaculate
gardens that would make the rest of
the world envious. It was
not until 1989, long after Olmsted’s
death, that the site was created and
the idea of the arboretum actually
came to fruition. Today, the North
Carolina Arboretum is still actively
under development, and in addition to
the beautiful gardens it features
hiking and bicycling trails as well.

The North Carolina Arboretum has
many beautiful garden collections
including the Blue
Ridge Quilt Garden, the Cliff
Dickinson Holly Garden, the Heritage
Garden (a garden filled with plants
that are used in making traditional
mountain crafts) and the National
Native Azalea Repository. Special
collections of trees including rare
bonsais and a group of Metasequoias
which, planted in 1950, are believed
to be the tallest in the south are also found within the NC
Arboretum. If you love gardening,
plants or just want to see a
gorgeous natural display, head over
