The Biltmore Estate NC was built in
1895 for George Vanderbilt II, the
son of railroad magnate and
entrepreneur William Henry
Vanderbilt. George had fallen in
love with the Blue Ridge Mountains
and decided to build his country
estate near Asheville to use for
entertaining his family and guests.
He commissioned Richard Morris Hunt
to design the French chateau
inspired home and later he chose
Frederick Law Olmsted, a man now
known as the father of landscape
architecture in the United States,
to design and lay out the more than
125,000 acres of gardens, dense
hardwood forests and rolling
hillsides. Vanderbilt's grand
Biltmore Estate was a home unlike
any other at its time and it remains
a timeless symbol of an era when so
many were striking it rich. During
the time when the Vanderbilt's used
it to entertain famous guests from
around the world, it housed a
swimming pool, bowling alley, and
elevator; all were amazing marvels
at the time. Today, Biltmore Estate
NC spreads across 4 acres or
approximately 175,000 square feet
and still includes priceless fine
art, book collections, antiques, and
furnishings including a chess set
that was once owned by Napoleon
Bonaparte.
